In memoriam Dr. Ariel Gustavo Scafuri

Dr. Ariel Gustavo Scafuri

It is with deep sorrow that ISSM informs the passing of our esteemed member, Dr. Ariel Gustavo Scafuri, after complications of COVID-19.

Prof. Scafuri was born on November 4, 1969 in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He obtained his MD and PhD titles in Sao Paulo, but it was in Fortaleza (Northeastern Brazil) that he developed most of his successful career. Although his primary area of expertise was Urology, he was also a board-certified Ob/Gyn specialist, which allowed him a distinct perspective of human sexuality. He was currently a Full Professor of Morphologic Sciences at Federal University of Ceara and the chairman of his multidisciplinary sexuality institute.

He was a very active member of ISSM. Most recently he was serving in multiple Committees at ISSM (Communication) and ISSWSH (Education, Member Outreach, and Online Services). He has also qualified as Fellow of the European Committee of Sexual Medicine (FECSM, 2012) and ISSWSH Fellow (IF, 2020). We are forever thankful for his service in our society.

Finally, he was a man of character and unique intelligence. He has always been considered a great communicator who has inspired a whole generation of healthcare professionals. Moreover, Prof. Scafuri has always been a friendly and helpful colleague, who was always interested in helping others and contributing to the common wellness.

His early departure at age 51 leaves a deep sense of sadness and his absence will be missed immensely. For these and other reasons, Ariel was an admirable human being and the field of sexual medicine continues in mourning for his loss.
